The site for crossbow sales you see above is a typical example of scammers and tricksters creating websites designed to look like they are based in the UK but in fact are based outside of the UK and therefore outside of UK control and our law inforcement. Don't think that you are a fool to fall for this trick as they are very clever and unless you probe deeper it is easy to be fooled. It is a simple process to check on the location of sites like these using websites such as http://www.iplocationfinder.com/www.huntingcrossbows.co.uk or http://dawhois.com/site/bcstore.co.uk.html as they can hide their web address but not the location of their computers. They have a Facebook account that states they are in Bristol but the page is registered in the US (you can tell from the dates). Just as with many others this site gives you an English telephone number but should you use it to contact them your suspicions should be hightened as the call is obviously not answered by anyone in the UK. Sites like this one hide their locations for a reason and that reason is to TRICK you into purchasing from them when you would not if you knew their true location, below are a few reasons why.
Import Duty & V.A.T.
When you receive items from outside of the UK you must pay a percentage of the cost price as import duty and then the whole total including the shipping is subject to 20% V.A.T. for further details visit http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htm. When you order from this company you will be asked to pay the duty & V.A.T. either before the delivery (Parcelforce) or you will receive an invoice from the other couriers after delivery. This is no small amount and will add at least 35% to the cost of your order. Should they send the goods in a way to avoid these charges YOU may be procecuted for non payment of Duty & V.A.T. The V.A.T. this website is charging on the crossbow sales are NOT being received by UK HMRC but kept by themselves.
Distance Selling Regulations
You made not have heard of this but they are the rules that protect you when purchasing online. In the UK you can return all goods purchased from a website within 7 working days for a full credit no questions asked. Unfortunately this does not apply to websites based outside of the UK, if you purchase goods from this website you have no rights and NO ONE to fall back on as the UK authorities have NO control over this website. If your goods are not as described or arrive damaged you have lost YOUR MONEY!
If you buy any goods from a UK retailer you have at least a 12 month warranty, that DOES NOT apply to items purchased from outside the UK. This site is under no obligation to repair or replace your faulty items.
In the UK we have some of the strictest rules on product quality but if you are duped into buying products from outside the UK the quality could be much inferior. We have had reports of crossbows purchased from these people firing when the safety catch is on.
Bcstore (www.huntingcrossbows.co.uk) is not the first website run by these scammers their first www.bestcrossbows.co.uk was successfully closed down by the Metropolitan Police but unfortunately Bcstore have so far evaded removal although they now trade as www.huntingcrossbows.co.uk. If the UK authorities had more power there would be less need for information sites such as this one.
If you have purchased products from this site and have purchased through Paypal you can simply open up a complaint in the RESOLUTION CENTRE, if you purchased using a card speak to your card provider.
There is good reason to be careful when purchasing goods on the internet but you should be safe if you follow some simple rules.
1. Check the websites location make sure they are based in the UK.
2. Make sure they have a UK landline phone number and ring them before you order.
3. Check the grammar and spelling on the website as this is a big givaway as with Bcstore.
4. If they only offer Paypal as a payment method it means they are unable to use a payment system from a bank which is much cheaper.
If you are interested in buying a crossbow there are some very good legitimate UK retailers but remember to use the rules above.
